There are some who think Sung's departure was more than him just wanting...
a change in his life. John Sung may be telling the truth but his contract was up next season and Whit didn't extend it. Maybe he was going to do so later this spring but the program had hit a wall the past 2 seasons, some of it (COVID and key injuries) not being Sung's fault. Maybe Sung felt he did all he could do and that the program hit its ceiling? Sung's reputation is being a program rebuilder. He's a quality lacrosse coach but he made some enemies in D-1 women's lacrosse when he got verbally committed recruits to switch to Tech in the last minute. There was some criticism from players who verbally committed to him who ended up being replaced by better recruits in the eleventh hour. There was a lot of pressure for Sung to succeed. His first two successful seasons elevated expectations. Some thought Tech WLAX was on the fast track to becoming a perennial Top 15 program. Sung just couldn't compete with the blueblood programs for top talent. His recruiting classes have been improving every year but his classes were similar to the High Points, Elon's, and Louisville's of the lacrosse world, not UVA or Duke. Sung said that he may return to coaching or he may try something new. I believe that coaching lacrosse is in his blood and that he'll eventually land somewhere sooner than later. He said that he wants to be closer to his daughter at ODU, so maybe a head coaching position opens up at ODU or William & Mary in the near future? Personally, I thought he'd leave Tech one day to coach in the Big 10 since he's a Midwest guy. I always thought Sung was like Buzz Williams and wouldn't stay at one place too long. I'm just surprised that it happen this year.
